MAY 11
I was detailed yesterday afternoon to issue dry earth to D Hall. With a party of 6 prisoners assisted by Assistant Warder Lal Singh I marched to the sand store, filled 12 buckets with dry earth and then marched to D Hall arriv- -ing there at 2.30 p.m. I issued the earth in the usual way and then called for the cleaner (No. 517) to put the dry earth boxes back into the cells, but receiving no answer to my call, I went up to No. 2 Ward to look for No. 517. When I got to No. 52 cell I saw a suit of pri- -soner's clothing minus a shirt lying on the cell floor. On leaving No. 52 cell I noticed that the bars of a window at the West end of the building had been tampered with. I at once went down to No. 1 Ward, called to the Entrance Hall Keeper and asked him if No. 517 was in the Hall, he replied "No" I then told him that I wanted the Principal Warder (McLeod). The Principal Warder arrived almost immediately. I then reported that No. 517 was missing from the Hall.
rincipal Warder McLeod states:-
I have no question to put to Warder Ellis, but I do not remember Warder Ellis saying anything to me concerning the clothing found by him in No. 52 cell. I went round No. 2 Ward myself and I sent Assistant Warder Lal Singh to search No. 2 Ward.
arder Ellis recalled:-
I found the prisoner's clothing in No. 52 cell and reported that I had done so when first visited by Principal Warder McLeod. I sent Assistant Warder Lal Singh to No. Ward before Principal Warder McLeod
visited
